Dr. Shelley Amen, MD, PhD is a board-certified psychiatrist and Assistant Professor at the VA CT Healthcare System in West Haven, with academic affiliation with the Yale Department of Psychiatry. She completed the advanced clinical research fellowship at the VA National Center for PTSD, training under Dr. Steven Southwick, an international leader in resilience, moral injury and PTSD treatment. Currently, she uses fMRI to investigate the effect of ketamine on fear conditioning and memory reconsolidation in PTSD. Her VA clinical practice involves telepsychiatry throughout Connecticut using evidence-based, trauma-focused treatments, including medication management and psychotherapies such as Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD. Dr. Amen previously served as a sergeant the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg as a parachute rigger and jumpmaster from 1987-1995 with wartime deployment to Iraq. She feels a particular calling to use her experiences toward recovery of combat trauma and the devastating effects of guilt, shame and moral injury in PTSD, as well as teaching Military Culture to the healthcare provider, which has led to her current work with Ukrainian mental health providers. Her ultimate goals are to improve the therapeutic alliance and decrease loss-to-follow-up, PTSD, depression and suicidality in Veterans, as well as enhance resilience in patients and treaters alike.
We encourage both members and non-members to join us and learn more about the WPA!
